Print Page Email Page

In this time of financial stress and economic turmoil many have turned to the serene quality of candlelight to calm our days and provide soothing relief in the evening hours.

Seven out of ten of today’s households use candles for interior design accents, specialized lighting or aromatherapy benefits. Votive candles, pillar candles and floating candles are just a few of the many popular styles available. Browse our candle pages for ideas on how you can incorporate the calming effects of candlelight in your home.

Candles come in virtually every shape and size

Taper: A long and slender candle that can range from 6 to 18 inches in length. Tapers are often also called dinner candles or candlesticks.

Pillar:  A self standing broad diameter candle that can measure 3 to 6 inches wide with one or more wicks. Pillar candles can range in height from 4 to 10 inches and up. Also called column candles, pillars can be round, square or hexagonal in shape. It is always recommended to use a well matched candle holder when burning your pillar candle.

Jar: A candle that is manufactured in a glass or metal container. These containers are specifically designed to withstand the candles heat when burned.

Votive: A small candle usually 1.5 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall designed for a cup style votive holder that holds the liquefied candle wax when burned. Originally designed simply for use in religious ceremonies, votives are now commonly available in a wide variety of colors and scents.

Tealight: A small cylindrical 1 by 1.5 inch candle, often found in small metal candle holders.

Floating Candles: Buoyant or floating candles come in a variety of sizes, colors and novelty designs. Floating pool candles are often used as decoration accents in swimming pools, birdbaths and backyard ponds.

Aromatherapy candles are more than a nice fragrance

Aromatherapy candles are widely known to enhance mood and lift spirits. Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils and similar aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of improving a person's mood, cognitive function or health. Preliminary scientific evidence is growing in all these areas.

The aroma of the natural essential oils stimulate the brain and causes a reaction. When taken into the lungs, the natural constituents can provide therapeutic benefit.

Lavender is believed to be one of the most calming scents while lemon and chamomile are believed to be energizing fragrances.
